Ancient Forest Guided Tour

Join one of our knowledgeable and engaging guides on easy, gently graded walking tracks. They’ll help you spot North Island robins, tomtits, kākā, tūī, bellbirds, hihi, tieke, fantails, kererū and wētā. They’ll introduce you to some of our local plants and trees and share stories about the history of this ambitious conservation project.

You’ll learn about the translocation programs that recently introduced kōkako and rifleman to a forest where they can thrive. Sanctuary Mountain® is now home to an estimated population of over 1000 kiwi.

This leisurely paced tour takes place in striking pest-free native forest dominated by towering tawa, rewarewa, pukatea, rimu and a wide variety of characteristic ferns. You will stand at the foot of a mature northern rata in the heart of the sanctuary and see the coalesced mass of roots that form the trunks of these magnificent trees.

You’ll listen to the birdsong, take in the majesty of our indigenous forest and try to spot the numerous bird species that call the maunga their home. Spend time in the clearing where cheeky New Zealand forest parrots – the kākā – like to hang out, then take an optional walk up the viewing tower for a unique perspective of the forest canopy from above.

These tours are generally with small groups. At the end of your tour, your guide can provide you with ideas of where in the forest to explore next, depending on your interests, or you may want to wander back for a cuppa at the Visitors Centre or bring your own snacks to sit and contemplate the beautiful ngahere.

By booking on this tour, your contribution helps Sanctuary Mountain® continue to protect the rare and endangered species that live wild on Maungatautari. A complimentary Sanctuary Explorer Pass is included, and we invite you to continue exploring the forest at the end of the tour.

Please check at least 10 minutes before your tour at Manu Tīoriori visitor centre.

Here you will pick up your Sanctuary Explorer Pass and visitor guide map and receive instructions as to where to meet your guide.

This is a 75-80 minute guided tour that usually finishes in the heart of Te Tūī ā Tāne southern enclosure. If you have limited time your guide may be able to accommodate a circular walking tour.

Grassroots Trust Velodrome ‘Have a Go’ sessions

'Have a Go' at riding the Velodrome

If you’ve never ridden on the Grassroots Trust Velodrome and want to give it a try, then yes, absolutely, you can Have-a-Go!

We offer introductory sessions to give anyone the chance to have a go at track cycling. This could be your first ever go on a velodrome and can be a one-off taster session to see if it’s for you; maybe the start of your process to gaining full track accreditation, or just something that you want to tick off your bucket list, so to speak. Whatever your reason, we make it doable and easy.

Our Have-a-Go session is a one-hour, track-based session which provides you with basic knowledge on how to ride a track bike and the opportunity to experience riding on the velodrome. One of our accredited and experienced Grassroots Trust Velodrome coaches will fit you with a bike and helmet and will expertly guide you at your pace, through your session on the track.

Don’t worry, at this stage you won’t be heading way up and experiencing the full banking of the track… but it will give you a taste of what to expect. And yes, anyone can do it – provided you are at least 10yrs old and 135cm (for safety reasons, so you can reach the pedals and handlebars on our bikes).

Not for you, rather someone else you know? Enquire about our Have-a-Go gift vouchers.

$25 per person.  Includes a one hour session, bike, helmet and coach.  Please note: We need a minimum of five people to run a Have a Go session. Bookings are essential and need to be made at least 24 hours in advance. We do allow bookings on the day if there is space and enough people for the session to go ahead.

Grassroots Trust Velodrome has a Have-a-Go session running regularly at weekends, with sessions on a Saturday and Sunday morning that are available for individuals to book.

Check our track schedule on the website velodrome.nz/track-have-a-go-session/ to see dates and times – just look for the blue Have-a-Go sessions.

Group bookings of 5 or more can be made at other times on request. Simply phone us on (07) 823 1421 / 0800 VELODROME to arrange.

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is an ancient, predator-free forest right here in the Waikato. The Visitor Centre is located on the Southern side of the mountain, just 30 minutes drive from Cambridge.

At 3,363 hectares, Sanctuary Mountain is by far the largest pest-proof fenced project in the world. Be amazed at the ancient trees towering majestically above well-maintained walking tracks and bathe in the diversity of sights and sounds within the sanctuary. You will come away enriched and enlightened by this spectacular environment.

Guided Tours

The best way to explore Sanctuary Mountain is by guided tour. Join one of their experienced guides on an informative tour as they share with you the stories behind the project and some of New Zealand’s most endangered species. You could spot tuatara (a prehistoric reptile and the last survivors of an order of reptiles that thrived in the age of the dinosaurs), the checky kākā or takahē (a unique flightless bird and conservation survivor).

A private night tour is a truly magical experience and introduces you to the night-time world of Sanctuary Mountain’s ancient forest. Departing at dusk, you will marvel at the twinkling lights of glowworms, discover by torchlight the wētā who venture out at night in search of food and listen for the calls of spotted brown kiwi and ruru.

Tautari Wetland Highlights Tour

Nestled in the valley below the visitor centre is the Tautari Wetland, protected by both a QEII covenant and our pest-proof fence. This picturesque wetland habitat is a safe haven for two of our taonga species. This intimate tour provides a wonderful opportunity to see these unique animals in the wild and is a great experience for all ages.

One of our knowledgeable guides may take you through the tuatarium in search of the well-camouflaged tuatara as they bask near the entrances to their burrows. Tuatara are the sole surviving members of an ancient group of reptiles found only in New Zealand.

You may also observe the endearing and very rare takahē and possibly see them receiving a supplementary fee. This large, flightless bird helped shape the future of conservation techniques in New Zealand.

By booking on this tour your contribution helps Sanctuary Mountain® continue to protect the rare and endangered species that live wild on Maungatautari.

Please note this tour has seasonal availability and restrictions:

Viewing of tuatara is reliant on seasonal temperature variations and, like us, they prefer to be tucked up inside their burrows during the winter months of June-August.

Viewing of takahē may be restricted during their breeding season October-January.
Please check in at least 10 minutes prior to your tour at Manu Tīoriori visitor centre.
This tour is 45-50 minutes long. Please allow 10-15 minutes to walk to and from the wetland enclosure.

Please check at least 10 minutes before your tour at Manu Tīoriori visitor centre, where a face covering is required (unless medically exempt). Children under 12 years will not be required to wear a face covering.

Here you will pick up your Sanctuary Explorer Pass and visitor guide map and receive instructions as to where to meet your guide.

The Tivoli Cinema is an independent Cinema established in the quiet town of Cambridge in 2014 by Shane Jarrett and Karen Hawes. Featuring a mix of films from around the world. Shane and Karen have not only brought their passion for good film to the Waipā area, but also the experience that encapsulates boutique cinema.

Featuring wines from Giesen, Kahurangi and Squawking Magpie, the sumptuous espresso blend from Laroma Coffee, and the award-winning range of beers from Harringtons. Throw into the mix New Zealand’s delicious Rush Munro Icecream, antipasto platters (GF also available) and an assortment of delights from local bakers.

For those of you who enjoy a more technical spin, our cinema features three state-of-the-art auditoriums, equipped with fully digital projection. Both theatres are fully air-conditioned and feature 7.1 Dolby surround sound. They are also equipped with the latest hearing-impaired technologies.

You can enjoy all this in our supremely comfortable couches, especially designed for our theatre.

The Tivoli is a constantly changing panorama offering up new discoveries and insights. We are proud of our cinema and look forward to entertaining you soon.
