Ruru’s Nest Retreat

The cottage is a cosy retreat, perfect for art and nature lovers, tucked away in the heart of the 17-hectare sculpture park and arboretum. Far from traffic and other houses, you are only likely to hear the rurus (our native owls) calling to each other during the night.

Guests can explore the park at their own pace with morning walks and evening picnics anywhere in the park that appeals. The park is open to the public 10am to 5pm daily, but guests have continuous access.

Enjoy your own one-bedroom in this two-story cottage with a covered porch perfect for your morning coffee or evening nightcap. In this light-filled retreat, there is a well-appointed kitchen, a log burner for those chilly nights, a separate sitting room with comfy sofas and upstairs is the bedroom.

Immediately surrounding the house, there are spaces to shift the outdoor furniture into the shade or the sun. On a fine day, take in views of the lily pond while you sip your coffee.

Our rules include no smoking because of fire danger and no pets because we are keen to protect our bird life (so we don't have pets of our own)

Guest access
The cottage is around 500 metres from the main house. After checking in, you might not see much of us! But if you need anything, we’re a short walk away.

Guests can explore the park at their own pace at any time with walks and picnics in any part that appeals.

The park is open to the public 10am to 5pm daily, but guests have continuous access. You will be provided with a gate opener. We ask that after the park’s opening hours, you re-close the gate when coming and going.

Other things to note
Our welcome basket includes fresh home-made bread, John’s marmalade, eggs, and seasonal NZ fruit.

In the refrigerator, you will find milk, butter, peanut butter, and plunger coffee grounds. There is a selection of loose tea and specialist tea bags.

For those who enjoy cooking their own food. We provide sugar, salt, and olive oil.

The old bathtub contains a range of herbs. Other herbs, such as kafir lime and bay leaves available on request.
