Wayne is a self-taught artist, who took up the brush in 1968 becoming a full-time artist in 1972. During this time, he has won many major New Zealand Art Awards – travelled the world, taught adult painting classes around the Waikato area, and opened his own art gallery in Cambridge in 1997 with wife, artist Robyn Barclay.

Wayne has a varied approach to his work – the subject dictates the style. The concept sometimes being colour, light or detail. Subjects vary from typical N.Z. landscapes, bush, coastal scenes, and horses to European themes as a result of his travels. Wayne has paintings in large and prestigious collections around the world. You can view his work and usually meet him in action painting on site at the gallery where he also now runs art classes.

Robyn Barclay began painting in 1991, and by 1997 was painting full-time. Her forte is an impressionist style where she is fast developing a reputation for fine works with an emphasis on strong, rich colour. Robyn has won major art awards, taught adult art classes, and travelled the world in search of inspiration for her paintings.

The Sculpture Park at Waitakaruru Arboretum provides an Art-in-Nature experience with over 100 sculptures and installations within one of New Zealand’s largest outdoor galleries.  Its 2km trail winds amongst a landscape of ponds, cliffs, rocks and  thousands of trees created from a former derelict quarry.  The park offers opportunities for children and families to interact with nature in creative ways.

Cambridge Society of Arts

Tucked away in a small building above Te Koo Utu Lake, a group of artists gather each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning for a few hours of creative chatter, with works of art to show for it at the end.

The Cambridge Society of Arts has been based out of the Thornton Rd premises known as The Painting Place since it started in the 1960s, and while members have come and gone, its kindred creativity has lived on.

Catherine Haworth is a New Zealand born artist, residing on her family farm, where many generations of her family has lived, loved, and created their own art. Catherine comes from a long line of creative and talented artists. Narelle Huggins

Narelle is largely a self-taught painter.  Working in acrylic with both palette knife and brush, her works can be distinguished into two main themes, landscape and still life.  Her ‘landscape’ paintings are motivated by a sentimental connection to place.  Narelle’s landscape and townscape paintings are inspired by the contrasting places that she has lived in and travelled to.  Her ‘still life’ paintings in a similar way draw on a nostalgic connection to time.  With a keen interest in mid-20th Century design, she often includes evocative ‘vintage’ pieces in her paintings.  Alongside a love for all things botanical, the cut flowers starring in her still life paintings are mostly from her own garden.  The overwhelming theme of all her works though, both still life and landscape, is the celebration and joyful use of colour.

Carole Hughes

Carole Hughes is a self-taught Cambridge artist who has a passion for colour and Fauve Art

“The use of colours, the bold thick strokes and the almost naïve way of putting paint on canvas is a magical blend in itself,” says Carole

Carole Hughes started painting in 1994 experimenting with oils and creating a style which would depict the elements which she had admired for so many years.

She travelled to Europe and has continued to paint large and colourful paintings from Italy, France, Serbia , Bosnia and Spain. These paintings showed that classic Fauve characteristic that “colour was how you want it to be not how it was meant to be.”

One of Carole’s paintings hangs in the halls of the Beehive and as a specialist in the Fauve Art movement she has been invited to give a presentation on Fauve artists and the influence they have had on her work.

Over the ensuing years Carole has exhibited in most of the large cities throughout New Zealand. She has been guest exhibitor at The Monterey Gallery, in Auckland, The Heritage Gallery in Cambridge, The Millwood Gallery in Wellington, plus various galleries in Nelson and Christchurch. Many of her canvases have travelled overseas and she has many followers throughout the world.

Jenny Scown

Jenny Scown has been passionate about photography since she held her first Olympus SLR camera in her hand at the age of 17. It was an immediate connection and evolved into a wonderful career in professional photography and as a photographic artist.

These days Jenny focuses mainly on creating artistic images that reflect her love of flowers, nature, light and the beautiful New Zealand landscape.
