On the picturesque private farmland you can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit film trilogies in a fascinating 2-hour guided tour.
The set has been completely rebuilt for The Hobbit and will remain as it was seen in these films and The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. During your tour you will see Hobbit Holes, The Green Dragon Inn, The Mill, double arched bridge and other structures and gardens built for the films. The success of the Oscar-winning film trilogy, The Lord of the Rings (LOTR), has helped attract thousands of visitors to the Hobbiton movie set, near Cambridge.
Scenes from the LOTR series and Sir Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies were shot on a farm at Hinuera, just 21.5km and 18 minutes’ drive from Cambridge.
There you can enjoy a two-hour guided tour and learn the story of how the Alexander family’s farm was turned into The Shire, as described by author J.R.R Tolkien.
Construction of the movie set began in March 1999 and filming began six months later with as many as 400 working on site, including actors Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Sir Ian Holm (Bilbo), Sean Astin (Sam), Billy Boyd (Pippin) and Dominic Monaghan (Merry).The set was rebuilt in 2011 for the making of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
The Shire of Tolkien’s Middle-earth comes to life as your guide shows you around the property. You’ll see hobbit holes, The Green Dragon Inn and Mill as seen on the big screen.
Because it remains a working farm, children can also pet animals during their visit.
