Canoeing is one of many watersports to make use of Lake Karapiro and its facilities, with the country’s best paddlers expected to train there in pursuit of appearances at future Olympiads and world championships.

In 2010, Sport New Zealand announced that Lake Karapiro would become the home of Canoe Racing New Zealand’s High Performance centre, a move aimed at helping the sport recapture its glory days from the 1980s when Ian Ferguson, Paul McDonald and other Kiwis won Olympic Gold.

Racing conditions are usually excellent on the lake because of its contours and protection from high winds, thanks to the surrounding hills and and shoreline trees. That’s also why the lake is favoured by kayakers, waka (outrigger canoe) enthusiasts and small yacht owners.

Canoeists can also paddle along the Waikato River, choosing whether to exert themselves or simply take in the scenery.

For information, contact the Cambridge i-SITE Information Centre beside the Town Hall.
