Noortje Smits  started pottery mid 1970 in her home country the Netherlands.

In 1981, after emigrating to New Zealand, she set up her own pottery studio in Putaruru and became a fulltime potter.

In 1990 she joined ‘Fire and Form’, a renowned co-operative based in Hamilton, which was dedicated to showcasing and selling crafts of exceptional quality.

Her work was shown in various New Zealand exhibitions gaining widespread acclaim and recognition.

One of her pieces is in the collection of Te Papa museum, Wellington.

Recently she has come back to her passion for pottery and is making a wide range of stoneware from her studio.
