Annual Waka Ama Sprint Nationals, New Zealand’s largest Waka Ama Regatta Lake Karapiro
Waka ama. Waka, or outrigger canoes, are part of the culture of Pacific people. In recent years, it has grown in popularity as a recreational activity and sport. Outriggers (ama) are used to stabilise canoes that are deeper than they are wide. The ama is lashed to two crossbeams, which are lashed to the hull. The ama is usually on the left side of the hull.
