If you fancy enjoying the beauty of Lake Karapiro or the Waikato River from the water, you might want to try paddling a kayak.

kayaking cambridge-isiteIt's a family-friendly way to explore the waterways around Cambridge and you can hire kayaks from The Boatshed Cafe, in Amber Lane, beside Lake Karapiro.

The Boatshed has been providing kayaks, equipment and guidance since 2000, helping everyone from beginners to those who want to compete in the sport.

The Karapiro Kayak Racing Club is based at the Boatshed, catering for those who want to paddle regularly and take part in kayak or multisport events. The club stages summer and winter series of races, over 6km, 12km and 18km.

The Boatshed can also arrange night trips for those who want to admire glow worms in the still of the night.

Many kayakers enter the annual Cambridge to Hamilton race, held every September as part of the Waikato River Restival. The 23km race is open to all types and classes of boats from stand-up paddleboards to waka and kayaks.
