The Cambridge Raceway, Taylor St, hosts about 25 harness race meetings a year, as well as about 30 greyhound racing meetings.
Formed in 1919, the Cambridge Trotting Club changed its name in 1987 to the Cambridge Harness Racing Club and amalgamated with the Te Awamutu Harness Racing Club in 1998. Other clubs to use the raceway are Morrinsville, Bay of Plenty and Rotorua.
The Cambridge club's premier event is the bi-annual New Zealand Championship Series, known as the Harness Jewels, in which pacers compete for more than $1.2 million in prizemoney.
The event draws spectators from all over the country and a park and ride scheme has operated for those wanting to come from Auckland. It's usually held in early June.
