Cambridge's role as a service centre to rural businesses in the area means the town is well served by tradespeople and contractors.


Waipa District takes part in the Waikato Building Consent Group, a collaboration of five Waikato councils to oversee building consents and to help co-ordinate information required by those needing work from builders and related trades. The register of licensed building practitioners shows about 135 are located in Cambridge.

The town has an ample number of locally-based plumbers, carpenters, architects, joiners and electricians for those needing work on house projects.


Waipa District has about 75 businesses providing services in the automotive and engineering businesses employing about 620 people.
In the year ending March 2011, Waipa's trade from the automotive and engineering sector grew 4.3% over the previous year, compared to 2.2% in the sector nationally. Over the past decade, the number of jobs in this sector had grown by an average of 2.9% a year. Annual Gross Domestic Product was estimated to be $28 million.*
