The range of retail services in Cambridge means the vast majority of residents choose to shop locally. In 2009, the Future Proof project (a joint venture of Waikato councils and other organisations) considered what was likely to change over the next 50 years.
It concluded that 85% of Cambridge residents would continue to consider local businesses as their first option - ample evidence that locals feel well-served by their retailers.
Waipa District has almost 120 retail businesses employing almost 800 people (4% of the local workforce).
In the year ending March 2011, Waipa's retail trade grew 9.6% over the previous year, giving it the district's biggest growth of any industry. During the year, the number of retail jobs grew by more than 153, reflecting the growth in sales. Annual Gross Domestic Product was estimated to be $23 million.
