For those interested in the arts, Cambridge has something for everyone. The town has its own theatre, venues for all types of music and no shortage of local artists who display their works.

Several art galleries show and sell works by local artists, while the Cambridge Community Arts Council promotes regular events such as the biannual Art Attack. The Cambridge Society of Arts runs a gallery in Thornton Rd, next to the children's playground.

Crafts

The Cambridge Country Store, in Victoria St - more commonly known as the Pink Church - is reputed to be New Zealand's largest craft centre and has won national tourism awards. The town also hosts regular crafts events such as the Quilt and Patchwork Expo and the twice yearly Giant Craft & Collectable Fair at the St Andrews Church.

Books

Waipa residents have access to about 152,000 books and 3,600 other items, such as CDs and DVDs, through libraries in Cambridge and nearby Te Awamutu.

Theatre

The Cambridge Repertory Company regularly performs plays at the Gaslight Theatre, in Alpha St. St Peter's School and Cambridge High School also regularly stage high quality productions open to the public.

Movies

The Tivoli Cinema is an independent Cinema established in Cambridge in 2014, featuring a mix of films from around the world. Other nearby cinemas are the five-screen Regent Theatre at Te Awamutu and Hamilton's Event Cinema complexes at Chartwell Square (six screens plus Mega screen). Hoyts have six screens and 1,400 seats at Te Awa, The Base, Te Rapa, as well as Metro by Hoyts at Centre Place, Hamilton or you can opt for the boutique Lido Hamilton, 501 Victoria St.

You can rent DVDs in Cambridge from Civic Video (12 Lake St) or United Video (37 Victoria St).

Music

Since the Cambridge Brass Band first played in 1877, the town has fostered many forms of music. The District Pipe Band has been playing since 1947 and these days you'll find all genres of music being performed live at venues ranging from the Town Hall to bars, or the Vilagrad Winery at Ohaupo which often hosts concerts. Crowded House and Split Enz star Neil Finn has even been known to drop in to the Cambridge Club for its jam sessions.

Concerts

Fine music enthusiast Gregor Morandini hosts up to six concerts a year at his home at 29 Alpha St, Cambridge, often featuring talented young musicians studying at Waikato University. Tickets are available through his website.

Performing arts

The Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts is part of Waikato University's east Hamilton campus (19km and 18 mins drive from Cambridge). The award-winning academy, opened in 2001, has a collection of specialist venues to host concerts, theatre productions, dance and art exhibitions. Its website lists upcoming events.

Festivals

Cambridge hosts an annual autumn festival which features music performances by well-known artists as well as literary, theatrical and dance events.

Photography

The Cambridge Camera Club has been helping local photographers develop their skills since 1957.
